“THE GLOBAL 16 DAYS CAMPAIGN (16 Days of Activism)”

Is an International campaign to challenge violence against women and Girls. The campaign runs every  year from 25th November to 10th December. It is originally Called the “16 Days of Activism against Gender  Based  Violence campaign” initiated  in 1991 by the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. In every year, the 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence campaign is either introduces a new theme or Continues an old theme focuses on one particular area of Gender inequality and works to bring attention to these issues and make changes that will have an impact.  

in 2023 campaign theme was “Changes begins with Me” where by Six (6) Paralegals Organizations found in Mbeya Region such as - WJPO Chunya, RLSWO Rungwe, SDRO Kyela, MBAPAO Mbeya Dc and SOHIPO Mbeya City in Collaboration with TEKU UNIVERSITY have been able to coordinate a Campaign Tour through  provision of Legal Aid and Education services so as to motivate the community to brings about changes in eradicating, oppose and reporting violence incidents starting from Home, Schools and Other working places into their both offices. 

The topic presented were children’s welfare, mental health, Entrepreneurship, women empowerment and Mostly focusing on Gender Based Violences mean; which were also aired through media platforms like radios (Sweet fm, Baraka fm, Chai fm and Rungwe fm) also involves some Musician, PA system and Car hiring . The campaign Tour  was abled to visit Schools and Government Offices located in Kyela district including Matema ward and Kasumulu border. The main goal of the visit being the provision of Legal Aid Services to the Marginalized community against the frequently occurrence of GBVs actions in those areas. 

Results/outcome of the Intervention:  

  1. Legal aid and Awareness was conducted to 2 ward offices, Schools and one to one education.
  2. Increased awareness for Fishermen to protect their assets and group reforms against loans acquiring  from Financial actors like Bankers, Municipals etc.
  3. Most people especially women were able to receive understanding on land rights and  business ideas.
  4. Fishermen, most youths and women were able receive links with paralegal units in different areas of their localities.
  5. Paralegals were able to learn and broaden their knowledge in relation to Fishing investment opportunities and activities found in Lake Nyasa at Kyela as well as business doing initiatives around Kasumulu border.
  6. Paralegal units were able to share experience with different government officials such as DCDO as  asistant registrar for legal aid providers, WEOs and VEOs, the school principal and Head teachers.
